My radar detector is going all kinds of nuts the whole way in. I couldn't figure it out until I passed some dude in a new(ish?) Audi. Then it was all quiet. WTF Audi?!?

DISCUSSION (23)

He likely had a similar/same radar detector.

They have to send signals in order to receive signals (you can't simply have a receiver, it doesn't work like that). You were probably also setting his off equally.

I have a super old (and useless) escort solo that doesn't detect new radar bands (interesting how they change and update so rapidly), but it'll get railroad crossings, garage door openers, and some emergency signals (Fire/EMT). Never once had it go off about a cop.

Audis have adaptive cruise control that use radar to keep a distance behind a leading car. That's what probably did it to ya!

the infrared or radar cruise setting it off? On the highway or a cruise control kind of area?

Radar based adaptive cruise control perhaps?

It's the sensors for blind spot and sudden stop monitors or some nonsense.

Radar or Lidar?

LEDs seem to throw a Lidar false on my Valentine One. Also, if I put my cell phone in front of the V1 while its ringing? Lidar false.

I'm blaming it on magnets because I don't know how they work either.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago! I think its the adaptive cruise control, but I'm not entirely sure.

I don't think so because it was only while I was behind him.

It only happened while I was behind him. As soon as I was past him it went away.

What a pain.

It was all over the place and on different signals. I doubt the LEDs since it was quite a strong signal and I could pick it up far away.

But it was only behind him must be the blind spot monitoring or some shit.

It was only behind him. In front I got no signal. Must be blindspot monitoring.

Same thing happened to me though. The minute I passed him, the radar went silent again. Maybe a strange coincidence? haha

Yeah it basically renders your detector useless... so you should give it to me...

If your radar doesn't have line of sight backwards, then it might not have recognized it. I don't know what you have, but many current units have four direction sensitivity, but a most require line of sight to be most effective. That I'm aware of, some wont go off until they get some line of sight confirmation.

Line of sight can bounce off reflective surfaces, but it's not always going to set it off. The way speed guns/radar detection work is pretty interesting. I suggest reading up on it sometime. I do a lot of work in radio, so it's just a scaled down version of what I'm familiar with, but I don't typically work with anything outside of broadcast FM or wireless audio gear.

That is strange. The V1 manual said that the taillights of certain makes and models will also throw Lidar falses (understanding your point that you were seeing different bands get hits).

My V1 also goes apeshit with the big digital road signs (the temporary, moveable ones). Full on K-band alert at max strength. The V1 goes "ahead," next to" and then "behind" as I pass them. It's almost like the DOT is embedding a signal in those things to mess with the detectors. It's an eerily strong signal for such an otherwise innocuous piece of machinery.

lol, I paid like $40 for it a decade ago. It has certainly earned its keep.

Radar-supported cruise control is all I read.

Well, yeah ... however, it should also make sure not to brake-check the traffic behind you. Also, as others have pointed out, it might have been part of the phalanx that is the entirety of Audi's safety gimmicks.
